I don't think it's very controversial to say that George Carlin is one of the "Great Standup Comedians."

"The Two Commandments" is one of my favorite bits of his.

Even if he doesn't floor me every time anymore, a list like that without Carlin on it should be a criminal offense.  The Two Commandments was genius.

Also from what I've heard from relatives, if you're going to see Carlin, just make sure it's at the end of the tour in the bigger venues.  When he's still working the smaller preliminary shows he just treats it like a day at the office, actually going down a list he keeps on stage and taking notes.  Not sure if it really makes his shows better at the end, but it really keeps his first shows from being as fun.  (Can't vouch for this personally, but I generally trust my sister-in-law with observations like that)
I saw Carlin in the late 90s, and it was one of his first shows testing out new material.  It was a trip seeing him live, but the material just wasn't great...yet.

I think my favorite special of his is Back In Town, it's from around 1996 or so....the whole thing is absolutely brilliant, especially his sprawling and intricate ideas on the death penalty and prisons.
I agree.  That was the first CD i ever heard by Carlin, and I still think its my favorite.

I LOVED Carlin when I was younger. He seems REALLY bitter and angry to me now.

this is exactly how i feel. his work early stuff is fucking brillant. his most recent comedy special is just a depressing angry rant to me. i hope he's gotten that out of his system but i doubt it..

I had this little day calendar thing that had a Carlin joke printed on each day.  I liked the one from June that said

I've been watching Carlin's shows on youtube, and I forgot how funny he is.

I used to own all his CDs...which brings me to my next point.

(ahhhhhhhhhh...i looked before i posted)

"all twelve of George Carlin s HBO concert specials, spanning nearly thirty years."

I just read the product description of the box set, and its only his televised appearances....but there are many great shows missing, apparently only available on CD.

It was a bit of a downer, but it still had its moments.

And it's not like I blame the guy. If being a former hippie, and watching your entire world-view be discredited by the last forty years of human history, weren't bad enough, a few years back he lost his wife to cancer. I may not find him laugh-out-loud hilarious these days, but I certainly won't judge him.
