Truman Capote Sent to Fight Krankor!

« Reply #15 on: April 20, 2008, 11:08:50 AM »

I first tried Harry Potter rifftrax on the player and it worked great all synced up and everything, but then I downloaded Beowulf, Raider and 300 to use on the player.  Beowulf won't even load, Raider loads the menu screen but when I press play and it shows the slide for the PG rating then the movie just freezes and won't move forward.  300 will load, but the DVD controls are grayed out except for skip forward and back and it is out of sync by about a second.  I was messing around with the files in a folder I had and tried to find an "open with" option and accidentally clicked "internet explorer" so now the files have the "internet explorer" logo next to them in the folder.  They still show up in the "library" portion of the DVD player they indeed still load as rifftrax just fine as well. Again I also tried Harry Potter today and it seems to be out of sync with the player now and it worked great yesterday.

I even tried downloading the codex and freed DVD player that was recommended, but nothing works for the player.  I'm not sure of the specs on my computer, but I know that it is at least 5 - 6 years old. Sorry to bother asking questions about the player guys, especially since it's only a BETA version, but I would like to try and get it working properly on my computer if possible.  I must say though it is a great idea though to have a program that syncs up movies for you automatically  Clap clap!.  If anything I can still sync up the movie manually, but it's so much better just letting a program do it for me. LOL.  Thank you in advance for the help and I hope to hear from you all very soon.

The RiffTrax player will is only compatible with the official versions of the DVD.

I'm using an official version of 300, and I'm also getting sync issues.  It sounds like it's off by a second or two at times.  I used the suggestion of skipping forward and back, that helps but it goes out of sync again.

I just downloaded the Beowulf Riff and it asked me to download the latest Rifftrax player.  Apparently that was a mistake, because it doesn't sync up at all.  I never had problems before.  It's off by 5 or more seconds.  I try to rewind with no luck.  I reload, wait 5 minutes for the freaking Riff to load, and nothing's sync.  This new player is terrible, or maybe it's just the Beowulf track.

I had the same prob. with beowulf doing without the player and then I found out it had to be the directors cut version.

Out of curiosity I decided to try the Rifftrax Player with the Korean Region 3 NTSC version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.  It's an official, non-bootleg distribution, and is exactly like the U.S. version except that, instead of Spanish, Korean is the secondary language, and when you select "Start" the movie actually starts instead of playing dozens of unskippable FBI and copyright warnings (which is why whenever I watch a Region 1 DVD I always go through the chapter select menu to instantly start on chapter 2 and skip back to chapter 1).  Well, no matter what I did, the entire movie consistently played out of sync by a second or two.

Despite the film industry's unethical attempts to manipulate my shopping habits, when I want to buy a movie on DVD, I will buy it from whichever national market provides a better consumer choice.  (The Harry Potter movies are usually released legally and legetimately in East Asia one or two months before they are in the U.S.)  Consequentially I have many DVDs that aren't Region 1.

My point is, it would be extremely benefitial if the Rifftrax player allowed for manual adjustment of the Rifftrax synchronization, then it wouldn't matter which DVD version the viewer has (aside from the issue of NTSC/PAL).

I'm not sure if Manual Synch is a possibility, that would be a question for the programmers.  Creating a RiffTrax Player file for every version and region code of the DVD is unfortunately an impossibility from a logistics standpoint, I hope you don't take it personally.

Wally, you do know there is a "Skip DVD warning screens" option on our player too, right? It allows you to skip straight to the movie (or menu) the next time you put a DVD in. Yes, it requires you to put the DVD in at least one time, but after that it remembers where the movie starts and can bring you right there the next time you watch it.

The RiffTrax Player is designed to play directly from the Discs they are authored to go along with - in some cases you might have a disc or two that has different regions/ or content may vary - what I may do on the next update is just simply leave open the synch at the chapter start points so users can modify at will in case they are using a non-authored disc-

Pass it around let me know

You know, I always wondered about that skip warning screen button. I'd never seen it available to use before.  Now it makes sense why.  I'll remember that.

HEY - give us the file format for the riff, and we in the open source community MIGHT find time to make a plugin for VLC:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

We can make it available for:

* Windows
* Linux
* MAC

You're not making any money off from the riff player, so why not?

If you look at the 'open format' thread, I've started an open source, cross-platform player in python. Source is hosted here: http://github.com/ja30278/pyriffplayer/tree/master and though it's not really ready for casual users (no gui file loading, crashes on some video formates), it already does some things that the official player does not (manual sync control, playing 'bare' files: mpeg, avi, etc).

It doesn't use the '.riff' files, partly because the format isn't open, and partly because that would limit it to working for only Official DVDs.

I looked at VLC, since that seemed like it _should_ be easy, but at the time couldn't see a straightforward way to make it do what I wanted. This was before the latest release though, and I know they've updated the APIs.

I haven't had time to work on it lately, but hope to come back to it at some point.

Have been using to Rifftrax player to view Roadhouse (retail DVD).  It will stay in sync until the third or 4th chapter and though the DVD progresses to the nesx chapter the sync skips back the previous chapter.  Tried fast forwarding and rewinding a bit without change in the degree of sync loss. Moving many chapters forward or back doesn't help.  Usually falls out of sync at the same place each time but has at a few other spots as well.   Tried both the most recent Rifftrax player versions 1.9.8.8 and the 1.1.1.5  with same issues. Tried fresh reinstall of each version of the player, fresh downloads of the Riff file and Standard and Widescreen versions of Roadhouse with and without subtitles.  Any other options besides just putting it on my iPod and listening manually?  Remember,"it's my way or the highway"

There really needs to be an option to simply manually adjust the riff timing earlier or later. It's a simple addition and would allow users to fix sync issues for every existing and future rifftrax (provided they have the right version of the movie anyway.)

- not allowing manual sync won't stop people from pirating the movies, they'll just use the .mp3
- not allowing manual sync causes problems for tons of legitimate users, myself included.

it doesn't matter that the player is in beta. with so many different computers and configurations, lag and bugs, there are always going to be sync issues. not including a simple across-the-board fix doesn't make any sense Sad

Have any riff files been updated, or is this a problem player side?

I have about 40 rifftrax and over half of them have some sort of sync issue. Some have riffs that occur a few seconds too quickly, some have riffs that are too late, and some have a pattern of riffs being late early in the film, fine in the middle, and early late in the film.

Moo.
