Mike Doughty - Golden Delicious

Why I bought it
I'm pretty much a huge Mike Doughty fan, since the first days of Soul Coughing...This was just released Tuesday, so it was kind of a no-brainer.  This is Mike's second studio album, which was preceded by two self-released LPs.

What does it sound like?
I guess I would call this indie pop-folk-rock.  It's probably closest to Jack Johnson or Dave Matthews, but it manages to stand on it's own.  Mike continues to showcase his "band" feel, taking it to another level, allowing many of the songs to include all out jam sessions.

Would I recommend it?
Well, if you like the two artists I just mentioned, I highly recommend you give this a shot.  Mike's music continues to mature, and this is as good as he's ever been.  Tracks like Fort Hood, I Just Want The Girl In The Blue Dress, and Nectarine are pure Mike Doughty.  But on most of these tracks he brings his band more to the forefront.. He throws in a full-band amped-up re-recording of 27 Jennifers, and while this song's overly polished slickness seems like overkill for a song that started out as a simple accoustic number, you can't help but tap your foot along anyways.  Now if we could just figure out why he decided to include the silly and out-of-place More Bacon Than The Pan Can Handle, which is a pretty embarrassing track on what is otherwise a superb album.

Eef Barzelay - The Ballad of Bitter Honey

Love love love this album and I finally got it.  I'd had most of it downloaded, but it really flows together beautifully.  Definitely listen to "Thanksgiving Waves" when you have a chance.  Amazing tune.

Meshuggah - ObZen

Why I bought it
Because I love the band and they never fail to meet my expectations.


What does it sound like?
Essentially they're a heavier, more technical Tool. Unlike Tool, however, none of their albums sound alike. While you will find elements that recall past Meshuggah releases, their albums don't sound like they were recorded during the same session as Tool's Lateralus and 10,000 Days did.

Would I recommend it?
Absolutely. Meshuggah are an excellent gateway band into extreme music.

Boondox - Krimson Creek

Why I bought it: I enjoyed Boondox' previous releases, The Harvest, and PunkinHed, and I thought the $8 pre-order price was reasonably fair, so I went for it. I had had some problems trying to buy The Harvest used, and ended up selling both copies I had purchased and burning the tracks onto a CD with MP3s of the PunkinHed tracks I had purchased from Amazon.com, so I didn't want to fuck around with trying to buy another used copy of a Boondox CD.

What does it sound like? Hip hop + hillbilly music + horror movie soundtrack. (I'm basing this off of the online sampler and Boondox' previous releases, because Krimson Creek won't actually be released until the 13th.)

Would I recommend it? If my description of what Boondox' music sounds like doesn't appeal to you, you probably won't like this. Check out The Harvest and PunkinHed, and see if you find them interesting. If you dislike them, you probably won't like this one either.

YUI - I Loved Yesterday



I bought this album because YUI just gets better with every album. I bought the CD+DVD edition because it came with the PVs of the singles off her last album which were fantastic.
also Yui song's remind me of Shibuya for some reason; just hanging on the streets with friends after spending a crapload of money at tower records ah those were the days.

Susumu Hirasawa - Siren



 this album is pretty good I found out about when i saw vocaloid Meiko sining a cover of "siren" over at nico nico douga
this album is relatively old, 1997 I think, so besides amazon.co.jp ,which I can't afford the shipping, I have no idea were to get Hirasawa's work aside from what he has available on his official site.
if you see it somewhere you should get it.

I'll always love her, but I haven't enjoyed an entire Alanis album since JLP.  I'm super happy for her and her enlightenment and all, but I prefer her angsty. 

This one is somewhere in between.  Van Wilder broke her heart so she's got the angry back a bit.  I like it well enough.  I just don't need this electronic shit in my former 90s alt chick music.  Bring back the guitars.

What does it sound like? Acid rap.

The Mountain Goats - The Life of the World to Come

Excellent album. I loved Heretic Pride, which was a loose collection of songs, but I am pleased to see John Darnielle return to an album theme. All of the songs are fantastic, my particular favorite at the moment is "Psalms 40:42".

John Darnielle has quite a unique voice and he's not palatable for everyone, but he is indisputably one of the top lyricists of his time. His use of word imagery appeals strongly to the writer in me and I will always love the subtle way his songs stir your emotions, almost taking you by surprise. The man is a mad genius, no doubt about it, and The Life of the World to Come is a return to top form.

Very very highly recommended.
