Was V supposed to start tonight? If so then I guess my ABC station isn't showing it for some reason. They seem to just be playing Dancing with the Stars. Man I hate that show!

Man I missed it because i thought it was on at 9 and it came on at 8,man I wish stations would rerun primetime shows in the afternoon instead of playing soaps and tabloid trash because now i will not get a chance to see it. Darn it I hate being stuck out in the country a half mile from the highspeed internet lines. The companies have been refused to bring the lines any closer for the past 8 years. Man i wish i had the money to move in town you can't do anything when you don't have highspeed.

I thought it was supposed to be a more gritty version of the original, that would call for a 9 or 10pm start.... I guess the rumors about ABC having second thoughts might have been true if they put it on in a crappy time slot.

"Dancing" is one of ABC's highest rated shows...that should be a prime spot for a show to premiere. Friend on a sci-fi board posted that they turned it off after 45 minutes in disgust and put the DVD of the original on to get the taste of it out of his mouth..... (I'll watch it later )

Yeah i know. The adds were trying make it look like a show aimed at adults and from what i know of the old show that was aimed at adults so why put it on in the family slot? Plus i am sure i saw some adds that said 9,also I thought it was supposed to be a two hour premire. If I can get some time on the library's computer tomorrow I will try and see it.
Am i the only one who doesn't understand why some studios and TV networks will invest all the money it takes to make a new TV show or movie and then to everything in their power to make sure it fails? You would think they would at least try to make their money back but know most new shows get moved around and then cancled afer half a dozen episodes, are they trying to lose money but not giving shows a chance to become a hit?

What's even more crazy is when they pull a show off the air after they have already finished more shows. Wonderfalls was a prime example, funny and interesting show, had a bunch of episodes that never aired, luckily we got them on DVD. It's not like they ever have great shows to put on in the place of the pulled show, so how does it make more money to pay for shows and never air them? Tax write off??

So, i thought the new series was actually pretty fun. It wasn't great... but i'm ready to settle in for a season and see how it goes. I have to admit that at first i thought it looked pretty horrible. The first half-hour or so really didn't look promising. But if you let a few of the stupid bits wash over you, accept the fact that you're watching a remake of a fuckin' B-movie from the 1980s, and give it a chance... i think it delivers.
In fact, the one thing i found lacking in the pilot was it's length. I actually thought that it was too short. Rather than a solid two-hour premier movie or something, they squeezed the entire premise into a single hour. That meant less time for character and plot development, and maybe even more detrimental... a lack of any subtlety. They're certainly wasting no time in rushing forward with their premise. But i have to admit, i'm kinda' hooked.

PS- Yeah, i know there's another thread about this. But that one seemed focused on rumors before the show ever even went into production, and it went off topic more times than i cared to read through. But go ahead and merge 'em if you want!

To the networks, a show just what keeps the commercials from bumping together. It's the carrot they give you to let them hit you with a stick. If people will buy ad time, they'll keep it on the air. And if a show doesn't sell to the advertisers for any reason they'd rather pull it (no matter how many episodes sit on the shelf) and put something that does pull in money....until that stops getting ratings and advertisers won't buy....and so on and so on.

So it's a scam they pull on the advertisers? I guess that makes sense, ratings get low so put any crap show in the same spot that has no ratings yet and sell the ad time at a higher price until the ratings come in for the crap show, rinse and repeat....

The pacing and overall story of the first was far better. You had Willy the likable Visitor who spoke bad english. He learned for a different country, but got put in LA instead. He was innocent and likable. He was one you could trust. Plus he was played by Freddy Kruger!
The original was much better with you not realizing they are reptiles till later. It was more subtle. Anna better eat a guinea pig is all I'm saying. Also the allegory for fascism was great and can apply at anytime. You got the great old jewish couple who survived the Holocaust and have the intelligence to see the visitors for what they are. Now it is less a fascist movement, and more of a cult.
CGI is lovely and all but dull. I miss the days where you had use an entire studio for a ship interior. A true set will always look better than a crappy ass CGI set.
People are idiots in shows like this. People instantly warm up to them. IIRC the original had more skepticism. Your telling me that with the hundreds of Movies and TV shows we have on aliens coming to earth that these people fawn over aliens at the drop of a hat? Please. We don't trust other humans from other countries. We are a paranoid species that is slow to trust those outside our circles. Yes there would be those people who hunt "aliens" and Bigfoot, etc who'd fall at their feet because suddenly they are not the moron on the block for believing.
I'd see a lot more caution with the governments. They'd meet and do a lot of discussion. But you'd probably have armed guards and military at the ready.
I'll watch a few episodes more to give it a chance. It isn't terrible or anything. Just I think the original miniseries (although a little campy) had the better storytelling.

Sounds like EFC did it better. That show takes place about three years after aliens come and the government is on their side because they have given the government a lot of tech but a good portion of the people still distrust the aliens.

I was listening to a talk radio program on the way home tonight (it is aired later in the evening here). He had a caller ask the guest host if he watched V last night. He said he missed it. Caller went on to say apparently ABC is now owned by Fox News because this show got past ABC attention on the subtext. He basically showed it equates to a view on Obama and the liberal movement. His points were stuff I originally missed and now they have been pointed out I am kicking myself for not picking up on it the first time.
- All the aliens are beautiful and make themselves look that way to appeal to us. A political tactic used by both sides from time to time. Obama was often described as good looking during election.
- Aliens offer Universal Health Care and cure all known diseases. Kind of what is being in political news with the free Health Care.
- The interview with Anna telling the reporter not to ask any questions that would make them look bad. People argue that Obama was asked easy questions during election to make him look good.
- The preacher talks about how the band wagon looks great, but before we jump on we should first make sure it is safe. This could be talk radio. They talked about how Obama looks great and sounds great, but you should learn what his real intentions are first.
No comments on what you think of Obama or politics. But this does seem to fit if you look at it a bit. Given the original was denouncing fascism and the dangers of it through subtext, it seems appropriate that the new series would also have a modern political/ideological subtext to it.
I do think that that this makes it a little more interesting. Now that I see it I'm going to watch every episode looking for more subtext. The show just got a lot more interesting in my book.
If you want to discuss this leave personal politics out. Do you see the parallels too or do you see it differently.

Isn't ABC owned by Disney not Fox? Also judging from their news and other shows I would say that at least 90% of the people who work at ABC voted for Obama.
Not to mention that this wouldn't be the first time in SCi-Fi bad aliens showed up looking pretty and saying that they would cure all diseases and then they try to take over,it's a standard Sci-Fi plot.
I mean if this is about Obama so was some stuff that was written when he was a kid.
