Roll Eyes

I can set my freaking watch by you.

I'd never wish this on anyone but...if, god forbid, they should ever "come for" you, gbeenie...I hope I'm there to see it.

This actually sounds like Harry Turtledove's World War: In the Balance and Colonization series.  It was interesting, but yeah...probably not enough similarity to "V" to warrant calling it that.

I think that's a great point, perhaps in this case it'd be better to start fresh instead of doing a remake.  As much as I love stuff like the new BSG, it'd be nice to see more original works.

Well, as a total remake me night not need giant motherships hovering over LA...

I'd like to retool it as thoroughly as BSG for retooled. I'd make the aliens less powerful but more desperate.

As I see it, their home sun began to misbehave, and they found they had a couple centuries at most to get out of their solar system. They had to work like hell, devoting their entire world effort to producing some serious tech level advances. (Imagine earth now if we discovered the sun was going to explode in 200 years...)

They developed anti-grav and reliable STL star travel, fusion power, etc, then had to flee their homeworld with only a fraction of their race.

On the way to their chosen system they picked up radio and TV. Shit, the place was inhabited, but they were comitted.

There are tens of thousands of them, not millions or billions. They have advanced tech but limited resources and numbers. Also there is dissention among them as to the morality of conquering another intelligent race.

No more of this "All aliens think the same" thing, the aliens are as diverse in attitude as humans are. Some want peaceful co existance, others want to wipe out humanity, some want to enslave it, others think they should refurbish their ship and move on.

Some factions on earth are willing to help them, others want to steal their tech, etc.

The human race also suffers the mother of all culture shock as it discovers that humanity is NOT the center of the universe. Some religious leaders denounce the aliens as satanic, for example.

It could be interesting, if done right..

There's a Alan Dean Foster book with almost this exact plot, it's called QUOZL, it's a very good book if you can find it.

Well, I guess that's the fundamental difference between me and you: you seem perfectly okay with "they," provided they're the right "they," whereas I'd just as soon have no "they" at all.

And yet you support this Administration with their Secret Prisons and vague opinions of what is and isn't torture....

The "they" I'm refering to is from that old quote:

Quote
First They Came for the Jews
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

-  Pastor Martin Niemöller

Still have quite a way from trade-unionist to me,  so,,,

Quote from: ABC Fall Preview
Today, the world woke up to find spaceships over every major city. The Visitors claim to have come in peace, bringing gifts of medical miracles and technological breakthroughs. They promise to do no harm. They're lying.

Most people believe the aliens have arrived just when we needed them most. We're eager to embrace their generous offers of help, but while tracking a terrorist cell, Homeland Security agent Erica Evans stumbles upon something far more sinister. Erica discovers that the aliens have plans to infiltrate our governments and businesses, planting seeds for their plot to control mankind. Convincing anyone of the truth will be impossible because the Visitors have two powerful weapons. First, they've given the people faith with their reassuring presence and gifts. Second, they've rallied our youth. Thousands of teens, including Erica's son, have been recruited as 'Peace Ambassadors' but they're actually serving as unwitting spies. When Erica gets thrust into the resistance movement, she'll have to balance her covert activities with her job and her role as a mother, fighting to protect her son Tyler - even as he joins forces with the enemy.

From executive producer Scott Peters, Emmy-nominated creator of The 4400, comes a bold re-imagining of the sci-fi classic. Let the invasion begin.

The series is produced by HDFilms in association with Warner Bros. Television. Scott Peters is executive producer/writer and Steve Pearlman and Jace Hall are executive producers.

This looks better than the original, but I can't say that it interests me at all; they've replaced a nazi allegory with...what...? Religion?

There's a difference??

Too bad the original series creator Kenneth Johnson has nothing to do with it. He is trying to get a V movie made though.

I don't remember much from the original since I was a little kiddo at the time, but I'll definitely give this one a shot.

I don't know what to say...on the one hand, I just watched the two mini-series again last year after not having seen them for over a decade, and I'd love to see a new version.  On the other, they'd better have the kick-ass opening music from "The Final Battle," even if it's remixed.  I love that theme.

I don't mind the whole religious thingie, though.  The original will always be good (well, except for the last ten minutes of 'The Final Battle,' anyway), and stands on its own as a Nazi/Fascist allegory.  But as important and telling as that was, a lot of remakes and...well, I hate the term, 'reimaginings,' often times reflect the current hot button issues, even if they're unintentional.  For example, the '50s "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was perceived as an allegory about Communism (or McCarthyism, depending on your viewpoint), even though the filmmakers claim it was made apolitically.  And the 2007 version is an allegory about how to waste a boatload of money on terrible film.   Grin  So, unless the show really sucks (and I never saw "The 4400," so I don't know if the producers know what they're doing or not), but it would be cool to see how good the aliens look in this version.  This one seems to be an allegory on media personality and demagoguery more than anything, which seems to be particularly apt for today's viewing audience.

One question about the old show: Watching the mini-series, there were two scenes I remembered seeing a long time ago, but didn't appear in what I saw.  I'm guessing they were in the short-lived TV season, but I just wanted to make sure I'm not crazy.  The first is a scene where Willie's hanging out with some people, and by chance somebody pulls a chunk of his arm off (or maybe his cheek?) and reveals who he really is.  The other was a funeral scene for one of the Visitors, inside a glass coffin that's being wheeled down an aisle.  Anybody confirm these?
