Well, when you have a site whose sole existence is to be snarky....

I think we now and then all have to realize that this is a community bursting at the seams with sarcastic people, and that now and then the language all of them use might rub someone the wrong way. When that happens, I think everyone just needs to back up, take a breath, realize it's really not personal against you, then return to the regularly scheduled sarcasm.

I see it like This. Rifftrax Player is Something that you want, you don't need it to play the Rifftrax. it is a Convenience.
Tho I don't know what the fuss is about seeing as how I just got the program and When I do get it working I don't see any advertisements at all.

He's talking about the banners for available Rifftrax in the corner of the window.

The thing that I think has caused some people to instantly reject the RiffTrax Player is that advertising has become a dirty word in the software business, and probably rightly so. If you only knew the number of systems out there, clogged to the point of unusability with Adware and Spyware. I've seen more than my share of them, worked hard hours trying to get them working again. A person could make a good living for himself doing nothing more than removing the crap off of the machines of dozens of computers.
No user who really knows anything about software will react to the word "advertising," as applied to a program on his computer, without a strong negative reaction. About the best it's ever been done was in the free version of Opera, and that was just text-based Google ads, and they don't do it anymore either. Not only are ads generally annoying, but the periodic download of new ads uses bandwidth and disk space, and is a security risk as well, and ultimately it's yet another repurposing of computer cycles, which rightfully belong to the owner of the computer, for ends contrary to his interests.
There, the screed portion of the message is complete. I'm sorry, but I am honor-bound to state it, for there are really no exceptions. Notice that these problems have nothing to do with how intrusive the ads are.
Now, there are as extenuating a set of circumstances here as one could hope to find. If all the ads are for other RiffTrax then it would seem to be minimally annoying, although this does depend on them not selling to other groups in the future. Plus, and importantly, creating a program that can play DVDs is not something that can be done for free, for a license fee must be paid for the DVD Consortium to provide that capability. (Yeah, there are free open source programs that can play DVDs, but rare would be the company that would risk creating their own DVD player based on that example. The DVD Consortium has big money behind it.)
So, I am provisionally in favor of the Rifftrax Player, on these conditions: 1. The ads do not spread out beyond RiffTrax, or other Legends Films, products. 2. The "riff" format remains, now and forever, an auxiliary format. If it becomes the primary method of distributing RiffTrax I will have pause, and if MP3 is abandoned then that day I abandon RiffTrax. Sorry, it is how it must be; in addition to the prior problems I have, the computer we mostly play them on does not have a DVD drive or an internet connection. 3. Get that Pro version out there as soon as possible, and keep the cost as close to the license fee as you can.

FYI... the .RIFF file actually contains the MP3 file. You can use the RiffTrax Player to extract it. So, even if the RIFF file became the sole means of distribution, you could still use the DVD/MP3 method of playing.

Anyone notice the only people bringing up getting rid of the MP3s are people saying "They'd better not get rid of the MP3s?"

To re-empasize:
-The RiffTrax player is an ADDITIONAL way to get RiffTrax. It is not the only way, nor is it going to become the only way. I don't know how much clearer we can make that, or why it's something that people assume is happening in the first place (still, nobody has been able to show us where this confusion is originating from.)
-Currently the "Ads" in the bottom corner display Tips on how to work the player, along with the Now Available banners you see on rifftrax.com. Essentially, this is to demonstrate a capability of the player. They do not contain, nor will they ever, ads for free ipod, shock the monkey, which of these three is the president, viagra or Nigerian 419 scams. They also disappear when viewing the movie in full screen mode. I have trouble seeing how the banners have any impact whatsoever on your enjoyment of the Riffing, unless you are just looking for something to get riled up about.
Believe me, I know how annoying these can be. I was watching Joost the other night for the first time, and there is a frequent Bug in the bottom right corner even when watching full screen. It was annoying and distracting. The banners in the RiffTrax player are not shown in full screen mode.
If a majority of people are NOT watching the movie in full screen mode, I understand that they could prove distracting. It would also be a big shock to me, as I don't see why you would not be watching in this manner.
Are we wrong in thinking this? Please let us know.

The only reason I could think of to watch outside of full screen mode is if I were doing something else at the same time, in which case I'd just reposition the window, likely with the ad/tip banner offscreen, so no problem there for me.
