Anyone recommend some good movies set it 18th century europe, especially about castles, especially about servants in castles? I'm researching that era.
I think "Start the Revolution Without Me" has a castle in it somewhere. |

Water - An incredibly beautiful film by Deepa Mehta about the harsh treatment of widows in India during the 1930's. I especially loved the cinematography, and the ending made me cry like a little girl.

GI Joe The Rise Of Cobra
Terrible movie. Just terrible and boring with laughable dialogue and huge gaps in logic. It did have a neat chase scene in Paris at one point in the film, but if you have seen the trailer, you kind of know how that one ends. The big ending set piece is a total mess.
Needless to say, this one just begs for a Rifftrax.

The Road
Let me first state that I had not read or really even heard of the novel before I saw this film. That being said, I can say that Hillcoat has created something that's a lot more than your regular old post apocalyptic movie. Viggo and Kodi are wonderful as the two main characters in the movie. The man acts as a narrator during certain parts of the stories, but for the most part the story unfolds on its own. In brief flashbacks we are able to see what life was like when the whole family was together and how it ended up being just the man and his son.
The Road feels extremely short, which I think is a good thing, leaving you with that feeling of wanting more, even though there really isn't anymore story to be told. The ending of the movie is so poignant and will stick with you for a while. That final shot works so well and is also really fantastic.
The movie is indeed at times disturbing, set around a time where a lot of the remaining humans are cannibals, surviving only on human flesh. Their are also some very scary and suspenseful scenes scattered through the movie that can awake the audience right when you were getting relaxed. The Road really feels like one of those movies that's going to grow a lot over multiple viewings and time. Set around two characters, Mortensen and Smit-McPhee really have to come off as father and son and in doing this, essentially create one of the most effective father son movies in recent memory, even though it's set in this disastrous setting.

Titanic (for the first time) with Rifftrax.
Rifftrax - very good. Loved the Delta Knights callback.
Movie - Honestly could have lived my whole life without having seen that and been just fine.

REMAINS OF THE DAY
Brilliant film, especially Emma and Anthony's performances. Just the kind of thing people take for granted because of the subtlety, and because they make it look easy. I want to read this book sometime. It's an interesting enough story about the butler and his life etc, but putting it in front of that backdrop with WWII coming makes it even more brilliant.

Minatou - Um ... how to sum up in a few words... holy shit? I freaking bizarre movie that actually pretty good until the third act when their effects budget runs out and they start getting WAY too ambitious for their talents.
A woman starts out with a lump on her neck that baffles doctors and turns out to be an ancient Native American medicine man being reborn. And then it gets weird.
Note to self: Its always great to see Burgess Meredith again. I should have a marathon of some of his better movies sometime.

There's Something About Mary (Extended).
When I saw this one in the theater, it was probably the funniest movie I'd seen since The Naked Gun, a good...9 years earlier. Now I watch it and chuckle once or twice. It's possibly because I don't really think Stiller's shtick is funny any more; it's possibly because I know how vapid Cameron Diaz actually is, and I find her not so much 'hot' as I can't not look at her--she's far too thin and never wears a bra in the movie, but I don't particularly find either of those things attractive.
Pretty solid minor characters in this--Warren, Woogie, the Pizza Guy and of course Pat Healy are all good.
The added scenes don't really do anything for me.
I think after watching a bunch of the Farrelly movies I'm confident in saying that Kingpin is far and away the best of them.
