Disagreeing I can handle. But when someone calls me an idiot (or "dolt"; whatever), it goes beyond simple disagreement no not really. he STRONGLY disagrees with your position you cant expect him to think of you as hyper intelligent. I STRONGLY disagree with that statement. Personal attack is personal attack, whatever you think of someone else's position. I guess it's ok to call you an idiot now. how do you like your car? is it comfortable? good on long trips? I put no less than 20000 miles on a car a year. I also do a lot of cross country driving just for the hell of it. would it be a good car for that?
It's not the most comfortable car. It's more of a useful car. I don't find the seats all that comfortable and the steering wheel is rather far away. The visibility isn't the greatest either. But the hatchback is great and it gets great gas mileage (I average around 45 mpg; I know it's below EPA but every car is). We've had it for about 40,000 miles and the only problems so far have been sensors going off when no real problem existed. If you're looking for comfort, I would consider something else (BTW, I loved my Saturn SL2).

I drove it about 9 hours straight for three days in a row. I don't remember it being too bad. I don't mean to be so negative. The seats mainly bothers me because of existing lower back issues. The steering wheel is a problem for both me and my wife, but we're on the short side. It may not be a problem if you are taller. I would strongly suggest that you test drive one.

Anyone have any data on the SMART cars? My brother drives one and loves it.
Its very under powered (on purpose) and its only a two seater. But it is very comfortable, lots of room and its little diesel engine gives it lots of inner charm.
He drives it from his place outside of Toronto to my place (4 hours away) on a regular basis and its quite fine.

In my travels to large European cities like Rome, Paris and London I must have seen hundreds of those things. They are perfectly suited to large urban environments with narrow roadways.

You realize, of course, if you replaced the words "global warming" with "the Bible," you'd sound exactly like Deckard.

They are starting to gain popularity in Canada. I see several of them in my town. They do preform ok on highways, as my brother has demonstrated. They are designed by Mercedes and are actually quite safe; 4 airbags and the frame is built like a roll cage. The steering on it is the nicest I've ever seen...very quick. Its also a semi-automatic with paddle shifters in the steering wheel.

Actually, environmental issues aside, Consumer Reports finally did a report on hybrid cars for their auto issue last year, because there was at last five-year owner data to use. What it revealed was that, even with increased fuel economy, hybrid cars do not make up their hugely increased sticker price in reduced fuel costs over five years.
In other words, if you drive a hybrid for "environmental" reasons, that's certainly up to you. But you will not save money doing it.
