2) Having the "smartest man on the planet" make the claim that the Cold War was resource-based, not ideological is one of the stupidest things I've heard of in a while, but it didn't hurt the story.  Frikkin' hippies, sheesh.

If there was "free energy" then there would be nothing to fight over.  Anything would be possible.  I think that was what he was getting at.  All "wars" are resource-based.  Ideology is just a symptom of the disease.

You are wrong.  The USSR had all the resources it could ever need within its own borders at the time.  The Cold War was 100% ideological.

Maybe in the short-term, day-to-day life, but come on, Dale...you know that both sides were thinking, "Some day we're going to need those things they have, and we don't want THAT TYPE OF PERSON WHO BELIEVES X to have them before we can!"

Plus, didn't the USSR experience several food shortages for a while? Or was that just the weird way they were equally dividing food up for everyone?

The shortages and famines the USSR caused itself were the results of their ideology , i.e. Communism,. i.e. a command economy.  Plenty of arable land, seed, sunlight, water, and mouths, but an absolute refusal to allow those varioous items to come together in useful ways.

You have to remember that that was one of the nasty things about the Cold War, especially in the 80s when it looked like it might actually happen - there seemed to be no sensible reason for it.

Well, come on, what else can I say?  I say that the Cold War was not about resources in any way, you think maybe I'll give a little and say it was kinda sorta, at the large level, really about resources.

But that's not true.

Doesn't change the fact that I really like the Watchmen movie though. Smiley

So, it was provoked from another thread and figured it belongs here:

Why is Bubastis in the movie?

Do spoilers even happen anymore in this thread?  Just in case:

Simple real-world answer: Snyder thought more people would complain if Bubastis WASN'T there than if she was.

In-movie answer: Uh...because Veidt is rich and likes weird animals?

In my opinion Bubastis shows just how whacked and full of shite Veidt is.  He's already snuffed millions, some personally, and is prepared to bet the entire world on his plan, and the only thing he shows a GRAM of compassion for is his frikkin' pet cat.  He doesn't pause and say "Forgive me, John" or "Forgive me, God", or plain old "Forgive me".  Nope, he pauses and says "Forgive me, girl."

So it's Snyder leaving in the Yes-Folks-He-Is-Truly-Whacked-a-tron.

Why is Silk Specter 2 shown putting away coffee cups on the funky owl plane, when the people they rescued were never seen drinking any coffee?

I dunno. I'd rather that lots of people I don't know die than one of my dogs.

I'd feel a lot more sorry for upsetting or causing pain to either of my dogs than I'd ever feel about upsetting or causing pain to either God or a god like entity that used to be human.

Silk Spectre putting away coffee cups was another holdover from the book.  In there she served coffee to the survivors of the burning building before dropping them off.  Not sure if that part was ever filmed, but the only reason I can think for it to be in there is so readers of the comic could have a little chuckle and hopefully everyone else'd just miss it as insignificant.

Well also we cut from people getting on to the people standing outside so I think it was just there to show that they had served coffee while they were on board.

Plus, I'm pretty sure they didn't show anyone using the toilet in the movie, and we KNOW they had to be.  I demand reshoots.
