I know I'm very late to the party, but I just recently bought Watchmen on Blu Ray, having never seen it or read the comic (cringe, superfans!! hehe)
and I gotta say I enjoyed the movie very thoroughly!! The action is great, the characters are well cast, the story is intriguing, the picture and sound are superb, and the chicks are hot! I'm SOOOOO in love with Malin Åkerman!!! Though I have to say I like her better with long black hair than with her natural blonde. But, being that she's from Sweden, I won't complain!

Of course, the blu ray is the directors cut, and the movie is REEEEEEALY LOOOOOOOONG!!!!! Though it's great from beginning to end, it just requires plenty of time and effort to watch it entirely.

It made be long but trust me the director's cut is much better then the theatrical cut.  The movie went from a 6.5 to an 8.5 for me.

I still haven't watched it yet on BD.  Maybe this weekend...hm.  But the thing about long movies--or movies in general--that I own on disc is that I can press "pause" or "stop" and I can get up and do something else. Weird, isn't it?

For me, at least, Watchmen is one of those movies I just don't want to stop until I'm done! It's that good. It's all or nothing.

Fair enough.  For me the ability to stop a movie for a while is one of the primary reasons I'd rather see it at home. Smiley

Did you read the Graphic Novel yet?

I was only able to spot one or two scenes that were added in.  I still think the two big changes from the book were, sum total, just fine.

1) Squishing one deus ex machina into one made sense and didn't hurt the story.

2) Having the "smartest man on the planet" make the claim that the Cold War was resource-based, not ideological is one of the stupidest things I've heard of in a while, but it didn't hurt the story.  Frikkin' hippies, sheesh.

I showed it to a buddy this last weekend who's not read the book and he liked it too.

If there was "free energy" then there would be nothing to fight over.  Anything would be possible.  I think that was what he was getting at.  All "wars" are resource-based.  Ideology is just a symptom of the disease.

What better said.

I really enjoyed the Director's Cut, definitely moreso than the theatrical. Some of the added scenes seemed completely unnecessary (the first one with the cops in Blake's apartment especially), whereas other ones were excellent (little things like showing an empty TV studio after Dr. Manhattan teleports everyone out to the big stuff, like Hollis' last stand...).

Yes, all wars at their heart are resource based the same as any conflict between two separate groups of animals other than humans.

Anthropologically speaking, conflicts arise over 1) breeding rights, 2) food, or 3) territory.   I would agree that pretty much all large-scale conflict originates over resources, but when you start bringing ideology into it, things can get confused so that you're fighting as if for resources (or breeding rights, or food, or territory), when in fact you're fighting for nothing more than an idea.

I think this is what Dale was getting at.

But I thinking your putting the cart in front of the horse there.  Ideology became the reason when the truth wasn't worth fighting for.

You are wrong.  The USSR had all the resources it could ever need within its own borders at the time.  The Cold War was 100% ideological.

Maybe in the short-term, day-to-day life, but come on, Dale...you know that both sides were thinking, "Some day we're going to need those things they have, and we don't want THAT TYPE OF PERSON WHO BELIEVES X to have them before we can!"
