Hollywood hates us viciously. They will spend millions of dollars simply to hurt us. Until I see the film, I'm assuming they'll ruin this. They'll chiken out on something important, I'm sure. I'm... sure.
wow, you're a really the glass is half full of shite kind of guy huh? I hate to admit it, but removing dissapointment from the fabric of my life has indeed increased my average happiness.

It's hell to see the world as it is, isn't it? You're constantly saddened to watch your worse fears come true. Meanwhile, you have to have people berate you for it.

I've gone the "whatever happens, happens" route the last few years and been much better for it.

I've gone the "whatever happens, happens" route the last few years and been much better for it. For this movie, I'm going with the Sarah Palin debate route. Lower the bar of expectation to such a low level that just showing up and not being a drooling boob is enough to count as a victory.

Benjamin Franklin said he was a pessimist - that way if bad things happened he was never disappointed and if good things happened he was pleasantly surprised. That, I think, it's the only way to approach movies these days. Especially comic book films.

Was that before or after he was electrocuted? I find expecting the worst using includes complaining either way.

Nah, Franklin rarely complained, he was actually a pretty fun chap, he liked the ladies and the ladies liked him.
For gloomy buggers you need John Adams.

Optimism is where it's at!
Expect the best! If it doesn't happen, find the bright side. You come out on top no matter what if you find the right perspective. :^)

For gloomy buggers you need John Adams. If you had to deal with Jefferson wanting to re-write the Constitution every few years and Madison trying to start a war with every other country on the planet while your son was drinking himself to death....you'd be a little blue yourself.

It did for a while, but I've evolved to the point where I can accept "where things stand" for the most part.

Don't forget Hamilton torpedoing Adams with impunity!!

See, this thread makes me smile, because not only am I in the middle of finally reading "Watchmen" (can I have my geek cred back now, please?), but I also just started finally reading Mike's "Mind Over Matters" and right there early on is his article on pessimism.
I feel like this thread is my own personal book club now.

You still have yet to appreciate my ability to drag you kicking and screaming into the realm of reality on those rare occasions.
