I learned that you don't have to follow the chain of command to get your designated places aboard this early Enterprise Roll Eyes

I learned JJ Abrams learned from other successful series.  The enemy ship is a cross between the Jupiter Mining Corporation ship Red Dwarf and the evil Shadow ships from Babylon 5.  Brilliant!

I learned that sometimes a black hole will spit you safely into another time and place, and sometimes it'll shred you and your ship into tiny pieces.

Yeah, I guess we need further 'studies' on this issue Tongue

I learned that in the 23rd century people hang out in bars getting drunk to 300-year-old music.

Yeah that drove me nuts.  Sorry to sound like a stickler for reality in science-fiction, but applying magical properties to black holes still strikes me as stupid.  If they'd given some sort of reason, no matter how bizarre (Nero's Phlebotinum reactors overloaded in proximity to the supernova and the singularity), why those ships went back in time after getting sucked through a black hole, I'd be less bothered.

I've only seen this movie in the theaters so my memory might be sketchy, but I think the Narada was being fired upon by the Enterprise with everything she had while being consumed by the Black Hole the Red Matter that was still onboard the Romulan vessel had created. Pay attention kiddies!!!

I also learned that students who were just on academic suspension and hold a low rank will be just handed the keys to the flagship.

I learned that a single star going supernova is big enough to threaten the entire galaxy.

Just so you know, supernovas have happened in our galaxy, several times.  One of them was observed in October 1987, and was measured by astronomers as approximately 600 astronomical units (meaning 600 times the average radius of Earth's orbit around the sun).

The Milky Way Galaxy is approximately 100,000 light-years in diameter.

1 light year = 63,239.6717 Astronomical Units or AU

So the Milky way is about 6,323,967,170 AU.  So somehow a supernova threatens something around 10,539,945 its size.

Okay, so I understand why they wanted it that big from a story standpoint.  After Romulus is destroyed, Spock still needs to destroy the supernova to advance the plot, but if there are no lives at stake there'd be no point.  But still, a simple tweak of the dialog could have fixed this.  "With the few surviving Romulans evacuated, their ships were still being overtaken by the expanding star.  I had to act quickly."  There.  You don't have to put the whole galaxy at risk, Spock would have acted in order to save one ship.

The 2200s are not the future?

Also I thought it was one star making a bunch of others go supernova in a chain reaction.  Also it's not like it is any sillier then anything else that has happened in the past of Star trek.  For one thing there is no way to travel faster then like and as far as we know there is no such race as Vulcans.
