I don't think you can really look outside of the top 5 for a winner. Argentina scraped through qualification, England have some pretty big weaknesses throughout the team, and France... they never seem to actually *want* it, despite their quality.

I seen the French goal refered to as "The Hand of Gaul"...... which is pretty funny if you know what that is a take off on.

I saw that match when it aired. Not quite as heartbreaking as the 1990 World Cup Semi-Finals, but still pretty tough to take.

Henry has owned up giving the usual blame the ref not me. if only players would play as though the ref could see everything. I'm glad i didn't like him before hand. Domenech(france coach) claimed to not see any hand. I agree, Maradona is too insane to lead argentina very far.

I'm not a football/soccer fan but that play in the Ireland v. France match was just egregious. In my opinion, it's just one more example of why replay needs to be employed in most sports. After yet another season of raging at baseball umpires, I'm really tired of certain sports not implementing replay simply because they have their heads up the ass of some bullshit romantic attachment to "tradition". Sorry, I'm ranting. It's just wrong.
One thing I noticed as I was watching highlights was the huge gap in the level of play between the U.S. and most of the rest of the world. Most of my exposure has been watching a few Galaxy games this past season. The international game is on a completely different level! Seems like a thousand-fold increase in skill, precision and finesse.

It really is a whole different thing. even though i could be going to quakes games around here i much prefer to watch crappy streams of premier league games on my computer cause it is just a much better game. and international games are my favorite (assuming they are actually playing for something i dont watch friendlies) cause the teams want to win so badly. its like war without the killing (at least on the field in the stands might be a whole different situation).

So, is the only way to get any satisfaction is to get a bunch of drunk Irish fans to boat over to France to cause havoc?

Huh. Well, I think we might make it out of the group stages after all. I think you're mostly right with your predictions, though I will say that Argentina will definitely step up their game for the finals and Portugal are a really great offensive team, if a little wonky at the back.
