First off anyone who argues for keeping someone on the side is just stupid.  Second why did she have to steal the thing and why did he have to kill himself off screen.  Couldn't she have just had the thing on when they started to sink and not thought to give it back.  I really don't see why Billy Zane needed to be a sub cartoon level villain.  It just seems like it makes the story to easy and too over the top with him as an out and out villain.  Couldn't he have just been not as nice a guy as jack with out being evil?

Not only that, but he's both super-evil and super-stupid.  There's no reason he had to hate the Picasso.

(although I should admit that I can see how this movie could be a hit.  There's a lot to like about this movie, except that it was way too long)

What part of, "Mary Sue," aren't you getting?  Making it overtly obvious plays to the psyche of the lowest common denomenator.

Zane's character is easily the worst thing about the film.  What is he really loved Rose and wasn't evil incarnate?  If he had any nuance at all, it might have made an interesting choice for the audience:

Was Rose a repressed girl finally breaking free?  Or was she a cheating skank who bones a prepubescent little kid because she's bored?

Zane being Beelzebub in this movie made everything way too simplistic.

She didn't take/steal it. Zane's character put it in his coat pocket and then put it on her. She didn't know she had it until after she'd already avoided being found by him.

And he had to kill himself off screen because he did it much later when the stock market crashed and that was in 1929.

So, you didn't really watch the movie...

I think he meant why write it that way instead of writing him dying on the Titanic or something so we'd get the pleasure of SEEING him die.  I think it's a valid question because I hated him so fucking much I wanted to "see the claret flow".

Yeah, it was a disappointment to see him, her mother, and that slimy guy who funded the ship, all survive. And if you think Zane (AKA Snidely Whiplash) surviving and not finding out about Rose is a plothole, what about her mother? You think she wouldn't have recognized her own daughter as a famous actress? Since she is apparently poor now, now that her daughter can't get her back into high society, you'd think she would have been searching for her daughter.

Speaking of her mother. I have never been one to be afraid of clowns before. But HOLY CRAP! You tell me, which is scarier:

LMFAO!

Oh, and I think all the survivors got a nice cash settlement so I don't think the mother ended up so poor.  Plus I'm pretty sure families of the dead also received a cash settlement so the mom probably got a double dip.  I mean, I realize she's fictional but you get what I'm saying.

I, oddly enough, as a 16 y/o girl at the time of Titanic's release, saw it, and hated it.   Hated the love story.  Got pissed at how they treated Molly Brown.   My old roommate, who is ten years older than me, and is not a girl, loves the shit out of it.   Boggled my mind.

But I understand why; the romance is the hook, irritating as it is.   The sinking of the ship is only mildly interesting, but throw in two sudden lovers who crossed boundaries to be together?    That grabs attention.

Yeah. This movie is popular for the same reason Twilight is popular. Women (teenage gilrs in particular), love romance, and ANY movie with romance in it , regardless of how bad, is going to be popular. I think of it akin to horror movie fans. Those of us who like monsters and gore will sit through the worst acting and plotholes, just to see cool kills, gore and creature effects.

P.S. Kudos for the avatar. Love it.

Well to be fair, said slimy guy actually did survive in real life, so it's hard to fault that decision.

Though yeah, always wondered what happened to her mother. She just sort of dropped off the radar. Or maybe Rose did contact her again later in life. Just because she didn't mention it in her story doesn't mean nothing had happened.

My answer: It DIDN'T Become a hit. James Cameron paid out of his own pocket to give people free tickets to go to this movie... yup, hundreds of millions out of his pocket. So indeed Titanic may be the highest grossing movie of all time... but only because the cheeky bugger cheated.
