By "these days", I mean about the last ten years or so.

It seems like every other movie is a mixture of barely audible dialogue and loud-as-shit gunshots, car chases, explosions.

Not that I mind them making all that action stuff sound cool, but would it KILL THEM to bring up the volume on the dialogue and balance things out? Then at least I can just stick to having it KINDA loud.

I'm sick of having it to turn it way up to hear the dialogue well, and then have to turn it way down again anytime someone fires a gun or gets into a brawl. Especially because I have what are known as NEIGHBORS! At my old place, it was more rural and not such a big deal, but I live in a townhouse now, so my neighbors are twenty feet that way *points left*.

Maybe there's something to this that I'm not understanding. And I know that bitching about it on a message board won't exactly change the situation, but it really bugs me.

This is a problem, I remember particularly with matrix Reloaded. I suppose the only consolation is that most blockbusters nowadays are so stupid that not hearing the dialog is not a loss.

Most surround processors have a function that decreases the overall dynamic range of a movie's audio, and punches up the center channel a notch.

Do you have a TV that simulates surround sound? You might need to turn that feature off or tweak its settings a bit. Surround sound channels being forced into only 2 stereo channels can sound hideous sometimes. That happened with some movies on my old TV. Also, check your DVD's audio settings menu to see if it has a separate Stereo mix. Most usually do nowadays.

NRRork, I totally agree. My brother is a sound designer, so we get on this subject all the time.

I almost always put the English subtitles on for exactly this reason. My neighbors, on the other hand... Angry
