I know stations that have been playing it non-stop since the song appeared in Independence Day.

Do you? I mean, have there been actual studies from credible sources, or is there any way that you could give me actual statistics? Not that I doubt that there are people who are losing sleep and committing suicide, but if there was a significant number, wouldn't there be reports about it in the media?
Oh, I'm sure you're right, there must be no people panicking or pulling a Hale-Bopp right now. You're all probably right, it was probably stupid of me to assume people in general don't worry about such things at all and are rational enough to not let it affect their mind or life at all in any way. Yeah, it was real moronic of me me to say that. Read what I said. I'm not saying that it's not happening at all. I asked if you have any evidence that it is happening to a significant degree. Because if it was, it would surely be reported on in the media. I haven't heard anything, but I don't watch the news or read the papers, so I get most of my news on the way to school or work every day, so it's possible that it's been reported on and I missed it. I'm just trying to discern if that is indeed the case.

I don't have evidence that it is happening to a significant degree. But we know how the media is, they love to blow small things out of proportion, and we both know people are influenced to a significant degree by the media.

True, but I'm just naive enough to believe that despite how unreliable the media can be, they can still be counted on to report something as major as large numbers of people committing suicide based on an ancient religious belief.

I'm not sure I'd want to hear about that. I hope you're right though that people in general have a better grip on reality than I think.

Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are two of the worst human beings on the face of the Earth for trying to propagate this BS for their own profit. Oh come now. They're just making a movie based on an idea sweeping popular culture. I'd hardly accuse them of trying to advance some kind of agenda. Do you know how many people are really panicking, losing sleep, and committing suicide over this thing? It may sound dumb but it's true. There's nothing funny about it, and their agenda is always $$$. Because a few loonies are going apeshit over this legend means that nobody anywhere can tell a fictionalized account of it? That's dumb. Is the OP as upset about the fact that Coast to Coast AM with George Noory has been doing this subject almost every other night now for a year....The History Channel has been doing specials...and there was a promo on SyFi for an upcoming special on 2012 this morning. How about this...are the makers of the "Left Behind" movies horrible people for making money on fictionalizing the end of the world?

And while we're at it, can we blame the creators of She's the Sheriff for causing thousands to lose their last shred of faith in humanity?

Based on what I have seen so far I think this movie looks like it could be dumber then The Day after Tomorrow. Think about that for a second. I am sure this one is getting riffed. Oh and I tell people who think 2012 is going to be the end of the world the same thing I tell people who thought 2000 would be the end of the world. It's not the end of the world it's the same scam that comes up ever ten to 20 years and it's only goal is to make you panic and buy a lot of books and video tapes. Also if it were the end of the world there isn't anything you can do about it so what is the point in panicing any way.
