Interesting discussion. I was wondering does everyone notice a bigger sales ratio on VODs as apposed to MP3s? I figured more people would probably purchase a VOD... but I find myself skipping any and all shorts nowadays. To me I find very little (if any) interest in buying shorts now. The bang for your buck seems to be lacking. Not to say they aren't good... just that its tough to warrant $.99 on a short when I could get a full movie riff for around $2 by any one of the many other iriffs out there. Unless Mike and the guys put out shorts... I probably won't be buying many of those in the future.
My biggest deciding factor on purchases is the preview. The synopsis never really factors into my spending. I do look at the artwork as important though. I'll pass up the less professional looking ones in favor of something done well. Its kind of like a first impression. It gives me that initial interest. A memorable name is essential also. I think all the big players in the iriff world have that in common. Josh Way seems to be an exception... but he has a fan base already to counter it.

i was actually in this crazed phase where i decided a VOD would sell better since the buyer wouldn't have to rent/buy a disc to watch it with, but at least at the time i was wondering this, a glance through the top 50 iriffs showed about a 50/50 split between MP3s and VODs, so i don't think it necessarily matters. i agree on the shorts thing, tho. basically if it's not Just Andrew or maybe one other group i can't think of cause it's 4 AM, i don't really buy shorts. i SOLD the shorts pack of 2 for $.75, at least trying to put SOME amt of bargain into the deal, but i totally agree. mostly it just seems a waste of money. i'm thinking of ways around this, or to do something slightly different. i know Cinester, Josh and others have done the whole 'free stuff on YouTube,' but i'm not really liking that idea. but the idea i HAVE seems like it'd take a LOT more time and effort. but is possibly worth it. oy. we'll see.

I thought VODs would help me sell more. And maybe they have, I don't really know as they are all I have done. I suppose I should try to riff a more modern film and just release an MP3 for it to see what happens. So far I have only done public domain movies so I can make VODs. To my surprise however, I have had requests to include the MP3 parallel to the VOD and I have seen on the forums people saying they don't bother with VODs at all. I guess it's a data storage issue? For some it’s so they can make DVD copies. For a while it seemed like all anyone was interested in was shorts. That's unfortunate about the previews as I don't feel mine are very strong and I only like about 50% of those done by others. Artwork is also unfortunate as I have done none. Though it was only a few hours ago I asked my younger brother to help me with it so very soon I will have some good stuff. Perhaps worst of all is that I have been told my product synopses are really great. Figures. What you said is understandable though, especially about the previews. I mean, how else can you tell right? Here are a couple of newbie questions: What is an iriff group and how do you start one?

An iRiff group is just what it sounds like. Its a group you can create on the main site and release iRiffs under its name. You can also select if you want to keep the group private or let fans join so they can follow your stuff easier.

There should be a dropdown under My Account that has a My Groups listing. I think that's were you should be able to get started.

Under "my account" click "my settings". I think you then need to click the "Selling" tab.

Also, on the edit page for a specific riff there will be a section where you can check the groups you want that riff to show up in. You can do it with new riffs and ones you've already uploaded. For example I uploaded the Lost City chapter I made and just had it under Ronin Fox Trax, then someone made a group for the Lost City iRiff Crossover, so I was able to join that and put my Lost City chapter in that group's listing too.

Okay, so I have some more newbie questions. In your edit iriff section there are to pictures you can upload, a thumbnail and a poster. What exactly is the difference? What are the seperate purposes and why are their size parameters different? I've read the explanations but something isn't clicking.

The poster is the graphic that appears on your product page, and if you make it onto them the "top iRiffs" list and "featured iRiff" slot. The thumbnail is a smaller square graphic that appears on catalog pages.
