Recording issues with Audacity

Me and my friend have just downloaded the beta version for Audacity and we have been trying to start recording our i riff.
We have been only successfully recording white noise, which what seems to be feedback from the headset with mic that
we are currently using. I'm not sure whether or not the feedback is coming from the mic or from this beta version of Audacity?
We are using my friend's laptop now, but the mic was working fine while I was making an iriff on my computer at my house.
Has anyone been having any recording issues using Audacity?
