It's not that much of a debate, really Smiley  OSS is the way to go. If and when we get to do it, we'll probably do it in Java, or Adobe AIR, or something that is cross-platform and open. None of that .NET nonsense.

Personally, I think the idea of a download manager (or even just allowing use of certain existing download managers) would be much more workable than PARs.  The Files screen is already pretty cluttered, especially for those of us who purchase prodigiously.
Don't some download managers use some kind of checksum, checked against the server?

What download managers can't be used with RiffTrax now??  In the early days you couldn't use them because of the 3 connection limit but that has been gone for quite awhile now.  Do download managers prevent corrupted files? The beauty of par files is if you download a 1 gig rar part and it is corrupt you then only have to download a 20-100mb file to repair it.  Instead of having to download the whole 1 gig again.

Well I (And I think everyone else) was talking about a dedicated manager. Like if you buy downloadable games from Steam, or EA, you get a program that keeps track of what's yours and helps you continue the download if you get interrupted. Nice to know it's at least considered a good idea, even though it's not currently possible. :^)

Pretty much anything called a download manager has the ability to resume interrupted downloads. I was responding to Indomitus' comment :

I was just curious as to what certain existing download managers are not allowed. Or that he thinks they are not allowed.

They are allowed.  There shouldn't be a problem using any download managers.

Well I've been trading emails with a guy who is using the Firefox built-in manager, but I guess that one isn't quite intelligent enough. His downloads are failing after only downloading 1/4 or so of the large .rar files. Maybe I'll suggest that he try using something else such as DAP to complete his downloads.

The idea of a proprietary RiffTrax download manager is mainly so that we could streamline the download process (and maybe the burning process for DVD images). I also like the idea of, if we ever do subscriptions, having the manager run in in the background and automatically downloading the newest track (based on your preference of course). Right now it's just a pipe dream but I think it'd be pretty sweet if we could implement.
