I assure you my friend, do not fall into the trap of believing a woman with nerdly interests must be attractive. There is always a gimmick with her personality.

On the other hand, a woman who plays video games, that makes her instantly hot!

So I've been told. 

And what kinds of video games do I have to play to remain the proper type of female nerd?  I know how these format wars can be.

Not sure what you mean by "proper type of female nerd" but here's my experience and maybe that'll answer your question:

The stereotypical "nerdy" girl is a bookworm

The "typical" girl (early 20's age group) is quite honestly somewhat of a freaking idiot, dumbed down into this sort of MTV Real-world creation who has a short attention span, has little to no hobbies, thinks that drinking = fun, has poor financial sense, never focuses on something long enough to get good at it, expects instant gratification to anything they try, pours on make-up because it makes them look like they have more color in pictures even though it makes them look artificial in person, dabbles on about nothing in conversation and has an expectation that the individuals around them should entertain them, and exaggerates / blows up minor issues etc for the sake of creating a conversation.

The typical girl, if she were to describe her interests, will always be out-doorsy despite the fact she rarely does those things. If she were to truely describe her interests and what she does in a typical day it would involve phone conversations, gossip, driving to places (i.e. wasting gas) just to get out, running/biking and watching movies.

I use "typical" loosely here

Now on the subject of video games...

The typical girl says she plays them but playing a game because someone asked you to try it or playing a flash game doesn't count.

The one game girls who don't play video games actually get interested in playing on their own is Halo, after watching their boyfriend/spouse play it.
The only game system I've seen girls actually want is the wii.
Everyone plays guitar hero/rock band, however, only gamers shell out the money to actually buy it
A lot of girls used to play sega/super nintendo when they were younger

Of the girls who actually play games as a hobby that I've met:
One was casual and out going, attractive, and the was someone everyone wanted to be around. She played dance dance, ghost recon, and some kinda outdated titles.
One was *really* gamer, socially different, etc. She said things like "that's boss" and used 1337 5p34k in real life. She also had no boobs and was kinda attractive and hanged around homosexuals, but wasn't one herself. Bi- maybe? I'm wondering if there's a hormone thing going on here. She played counter-strike (the OLD one, even though she had the new one) and WoW almost exclusively and at unhealthy levels with her clan mates. She was pretty good at CS
One played games like Silent Hill... and not really sure what other ones. She was also socially awkward but not nearly to the point of this previous girl. Kind of attractive
One played all sorts of games but wasn't really attractive and I don't think she was that good at them. I don't know this one that well
One is attractive and has a wii and that's all I know
One was ok in terms of looks and played a lot of Diablo II, even though it was 2005
One was ok in terms of looks and I know played Oblivion and other games
One wasn't attractive, was completely decked out on games, and even though I never knew her except as an acquaintance I could tell she was really into RPGs (this was a girl in one of my college classes)
One is somewhat attractive and plays adventure type games and first person shooters, as well as some others
My fiancee doesn't play games as a hobby but likes tomb raider and can have fun with halo but she's not that good and won't spend the time to practice and get good

So after writing this I suppose the "proper type of female nerd" who played video games would play adventure games primarily with some first person shooter thrown in but she wouldn't be that good at the first person shooter.

I've yet to meet a girl who played a real time strategy game.

If you understand everything I just wrote then you are indeed a NEEERRRDDD!!!!

Kind of hard to play Diablo III since it hasn't come out yet....   

I meant platform - XBox, Playstation, PSP, Wii or just plain old PC.

I mean if we're going to get into a whole "Which game is or isn't cool anymore" especially for girl geeks....that's a whole new thread over in the Video Game part.
