In America, because audiences are addicted to the familiar and executives worship the almighty dollar over innovation and artistry, networks tend to beat dead horses [or is it cash cows -- too many animal phrases to keep track of] with regards to once successful television shows.
I also belong to a larger growing segment of the viewing public that is losing patience with shows that go on past their freshness date.
That being said, I never made it through the pilot of "Friends".
But I think it's mostly because TV shows have a life span, and when one goes past its time to go the quality goes as well. Writers leave and are replaced by others who might not have shared the original vision.
I just read today about how art is like catching lightning in a bottle. When a TV show stays on the air, it's like it's on life-support. It always reminds me of the scene in "GroundHog Day" where the day after his perfect day, Bill Murray's character tries to re-create it.
England has a much better idea with regards to TV show life spans. If someone can create a wonderful show that everyone loves, common sense would say that they might be able to do it again.

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds of me doing something incredibly stupid, and I went ahead anyway.

Yea.. I think there is a point where that edge is lost and it's a slow cruise downhill after that... (There was a website dedicated to just that once... something to do with Fonzie...)
Jumptheshark.com p.s. do not attempt to jump a shark Jumptheshark.com doesn't exist any more. TV Guide bought it and basically the URL redirects to tvguide.com now. There is no more discussion of TV shows jumping the metaphorical fish.

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Pink Lady and Jeff yet. That show was the gold standard of bad television. I actually like Pink Lady (yeah, I know - but I lived in Japan for a while and it got to me), and even I was writhing in agony watching that show.

It's possible also that TV Guide wanted the increased traffic that having a popular URL like jumptheshark.com point to them would bring, but without the effort required to maintain a web site.

"You can lead a horse to water...." So they get them to their website under false circumstances and then just piss them off. And people who loved the old site now hate TV Guide for it being gone. Do you think these people then stick around? Really?

Do you think these people then stick around? Really? It's possible. It stands to reason that somebody who enjoys entertainment news would also enjoy Jumptheshark.com (although the reverse is less likely). After being lured to TV Guide's site under these false pretenses, an eye catching article would keep them there. Me, I hated tvguide.com before due to their TV Listings grid that seemed to suck up a tremendous amount of computer power. I just want to get a quick glance at what's on tonight, I don't want to get buried in Flash-filled popups and I don't want it to take 15 minutes. That they hijacked and torpedoed Jump The Shark makes it even worse.

Along with Small Wonder, I recall "Out of This World" which, while not as bad as Small Wonder or even Full House, was bad with the exception of the attractive female teenage lead (at least to me as a teenager). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VafQtxQgtOo

The worst t.v. shows in history are as follows 1: Americas next top model. How Tyra is not on disablity for having downsyndrome I cant fathom .
2: The hills ( Any reality show on M.t.v )
3: Mcmillian and wife ( What are "Things my mom watched that I hated" Alex )
4: Remember that fake Ghostbusters cartoon? That was so shitty that they named the trademark Ghostbusters cartoon "The Real Ghost busters"? Either of those !
5: Small wonder ...blagh
6: Joey (just kidding I loved that one) & 7: Any cartoon I loved as a kid that has been recently raped with computer animation !

4: Remember that fake Ghostbusters cartoon? No......which one was that? That was so shitty that they named the trademark Ghostbusters cartoon "The Real Ghost busters"? They had to call it that because this live action Saturday morning show had the title first....by nine years...but it's not a cartoon.

After the film came out there was a cartoon version of that though. And they had to call themselves "The Real Ghostbusters" after they got slapped by a judge.... Satanloveskitties was saying that there was yet another cartoon....or was he thinking that the show I mentioned was a cartoon?

Yeah, it was done by filmation. There was some really crappy show like that from the early 80s that had some kind of robots too. I remember being very confused about products from these cartoons called "ghostbusters" when looking through a JC Penney wishbook for Christmas toys one year. Edit: Ah, it was the same cartoon. Here's the weird skeleton robot thing: Fucking creepy cartoon.

Yeah, it was done by filmation. Looks like a cartoon version of the Forrest Tucker/Larry Storch show.... Wow. Missed that one altogether.
