You can concern yourself with bigger things...

The folks at the Star Trek: Phase II (nee "New Voyages") team have taken on a new series, this time with the copyrights secured and (gasp!) professional actors.

The story, at Trekmovie, says:

Quote
Starting with the pilot, which is currently being written, this new Buck Rogers web series will tell the origin story as laid out in the comics, showing how Lucas ‘Buck’ Rogers was propelled from World War I, into a future Earth in the 25th Century. The plan is to use what Cawley calls a ‘retro-contemporary’ look to the show, harkening back to the old style comics, but also using modern techniques, including CGI.

I like the idea of it--I love "retro" future stuff (Sky Captain, as I've said elsewhere, is a favorite of mine)--but I'm worried about the execution. I know he says that he won't be in it.  I know he says he will cast professional actors.  But what is their caliber going to be? They'll all either be just-starting-out people, like the guy pictured below as Buck, or older people who couldn't cut it in real acting.  And 20 eps a year? That's going to be a pretty demanding job for the massive amount of CGI they'll need.

Unless they go -really- retro and film it all on cardboard sets, and the aliens will just be fat guys in high pants, with an occasional dog in prosthetics or something.

Since this will be streaming, wonder if it will end up on Hulu? And if so, we know that Mike and the boys can riff these...

Thoughts?

I'm more interested in 1980s Pamela Hensley.  RROWR.

The article mentions that they hope to have a lot of famous genre guest-stars from the past. I'd love to see Emperor Draco played by Michael Ansara.

Oh yea... she was no slouch either.

As far as Emperor Draco guy... he's gotta be like 90 years old and/or dead by now... The Gil Gerard show is 30 years old and he wasn't exactly young back then.

He's 87, yeah. Wiki says he's "semi retired," and hell, all it has to be is a guest shot of him looking imperious on a throne.

Uh, is it just me, or did the producers go out and find someone who looks EXACTLY like the guy from the cancelled Flash Gordon series so they could rip that off, but with Buck Rogers? I ask because I also did that. My show is called Fluck Flogers and will be airing on YouTube soon.

How did you get into the old series?  It's like watching paint dry, but the paint never dries and it turns out you forgot to sand and that you used the wrong color paint.

To say the least, the new BSG made Starbuck more fun for me to watch.  I mean, really, which do you prefer here?

I dunno... a guy with a cigar versus a boring idiot.

I'd rather watch the whole BSG original series including BSG 80 than five minutes of the new one.
