The only thing actually removed from the trilogy was a few seconds of guards in the Death Star getting blasts to the chest. Everything else was a very generous, expensive addition.
Not quite true. I'm actually on your side on this one, and I rather enjoyed the Special Editions too, and even enjoyed me some Prequel (Though I've learned not to speak up about it much in these parts.) but there WERE 2 significant and somewhat lamentable things removed from the trilogy: Lapti Nek and Yub Nub. They were 2 of my favorite examples of the Star Wars take on alien music. I see WHY he replaced the Ewok Celebration with a galaxy-wide montage, and I GUESS I see why he wanted to add a little something to the dance in Jabba's palace, but those two songs are unfortunate victims.
I DID enjoy the cleaned-up X-Wings, the establishing shot of Mos Eisley, the extra Wampa footage, and the new Death Star explosions, though. :^)
