Bruce said it best: "You're no beauty, but hey you're alright".

It's funny you bring that up because even as a kid who was anything but a player, when I first heard that I was like "Damn Bruce, you're really bad at complimenting women, aren't you?"

My understanding of comedy has always been: if it's funny say or do it. I don't think M. Gyllenhaal is ugly, but she does have a unique look. I thought those jokes were funny. Keep in mind they also intimated that Katie Holmes is ugly and I certainly don't think that's the case, but I laughed at that too.

There's too much sensitivity around here sometimes about "mean-spirited" humor. If it's funny, laugh, if not, don't. I think the humor from the Star Wars prequels was pretty harsh and that's why I thought those were so funny. Lucas and the material deserved it.

Once again, if it's funny, I'll laugh, mean-spirited or not. I'm glad comedy isn't moderated by what may be "too mean."

Insulting fat, dumpy people (Joe Don Baker), is fine because that's something that they could do something about. Saying somebody's face is ugly is just mean. There's nothing they can do about it. It's not fair to pull somebody down because of something they can't control. It's low and cheap.

Plus, if Maggie Gyllenhaal is who I think it is, I found her very attractive. I can imagine her face not being your cup of tea, but I can't imagine how anybody could consider her downright ugly.

Keep in mind I have not seen the riff and am going solely off what has been written here.

EDIT: Of course, none of this applies to D.J Qualls

Maggie Gyllenhaal wouldn't be Maggie Gyllenhaal looking like Maggie Gyllenhaal if her father wasn't Stephen Gyllenhaal. That having been said, she's rich and famous and jokes about her appearance heard on a downloadable mp3 commentary  track of a movie she was in probably  won't get back to her, and very likely wouldn't sting all that much if they did. It's hard to cry yourself to sleep on an Ophelia pillow.

Jokes about someone's appearance can and should be mean so long as they're also funny, not just mean. I can also see why there would be more of them here, because riffing a movie the caliber of The Dark Knight, one would imagine they  were reaching a little more than they would on, say, Battlefield Earth.

It wasn't really that mean. They never outright said, "she's ugly." They just mistook her for her brother and questioned her gender. Nothing wrong with that.
