Maggie Gyllenhaal may not be a 10 on a Holywood scale of standards, but she's not a dog. I mean, beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but she's obviously an attractive woman and the jokes on her looks in this Trax seemed out of line to me.

Harsh jokes about physical appearance are pretty much tradition; they did them in MST quite often. I don't see why they should be off limits.
I once heard her described as having a face like a "sad cartoon turtle", and I agree.

The ones I recall in MST were against people who, well, "deserved it" for want of a better term. Obese people, people who were not attractive, chin butts, but the jokes against Maggie -like her being mistaken for her brother- seemed needlessly harsh.

Only if they're Joe Don Baker.

Only if they're Joe Don Baker. Speaking of Joe Don Baker, I've always wanted to say to the MST3K crew about him-- What the F### is your problem? Did he beat one of you up in grade-school or something? Did he sleep with one of your wives? He's just another actor trying to make a living. I looked him up on the net and really didn't find anything bad about him like he's a drunk or an abusive husband or anything. When watching Final Justice, I actually turned off the ep halfway through. Frankly, I was embarressed for the MST3K writers. And let me just say, I've never liked 'he's fat' jokes, but mainly because they're cheap jokes. Anyone should be able to take a few jokes about them, especially if their in Hollywood. But seriously, in my opinion, Final Justice was a pathetic display of comedy writing. And beyond that it went from light-hearted riffing to mean-spirited trashing. It made me think less of the MST3K crew afterwards. Luckily, since then you all have started up the blog, and Bill, I've come to find you one of the funniest and nicest, most sincere people I've ever 'met.' Just goes to show that everyone has off days/projects. I just wanted to post this because comments like "Harsh jokes about physical appearance are pretty much tradition; they did them in MST quite often." are bullshit. It's fanboyism mixed with appeal to history fallacy. -BoB3k

Maggie Gyllenhaal is very, very hot. I'm pretty sure she is because I've already had my eyes checked for cataracts. I'm going to put this as gently as I can, but I think maybe the riffers need their eyes examined.

There are lots of actors who repeatedly get the business from the riffers. Joe Don Baker, John Agar, Shia Le-what's-his-name (can't remember how to spell it), etc. It's not just about looks, because Agar's not really bad-looking. Every once in a while they just get someone they like to beat up on, and half the time I have no idea why. (I know everyone beats up on Shia around here, but I'm not even sure about the reason for that. He seems to jabber a lot in all his roles, but it's not like he writes his own scripts.) The point is, it just seems to be part of what they do.
