They made a very good point - Why does wolverine have such silly hair and ridiculous sideburns? It's not like a wolverine looks remotely like that.

Well, they make good points about all the other non-wolverine type powers he has. Except for the claws; all wolverines have retractile indestructible claws. They're just too lazy to use them.

Personally, I think he's named Wolverine because he's highly irritable and likely to steal your food if you give him the chance.  The rest is probably just incidental.

My hair can be pretty fussy sometimes, especially right after a haircut when I get this irritating cowlick.  Maybe Wolverine just couldn't find a hairstyle that worked for him without too much maintenance and gave up.
