Popular, but cheesy. Even Raiders is cheesy. The ones they did that aren't popular are probably the ones that lost them money. But usually, it's Matrix, Episode I stuff. Not "good" movies. They aren't riffing Munich. They did Iron Man because it's goofy. They probably won't do Dark Knight.

Exactly.  There are plenty of good movies that have riff-able moments in them.

I mean, c'mon.  Look at Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.  Arguably the best of the entire classic film lot.

But you find me ONE person who doesn't mock Shatner when he shouts "KHAN!!!  (Khan!!....khan!)"

It's riffed by EVERYONE.

But it's still a good movie.

The problem with Iron Man is that it's goofy, and it knows it. It's a fun movie, which I don't think makes for good riffing. If you want to pick on a movie (I know riffing isn't always picking on the movie, BTW, but I think it's funnier that way), pick on one that thinks it's awesome.

I noticed.  Apparently I'm the only one who thought "Dark Knight" was ridiculously cheesy.  The whole two face storyline was useless too.  Anything with Lucius was laughable...but there's another thread for that.  I was hoping they'd do a Rifftrax for it, actually.  It's a comic book movie.  It's supposed to be cheesy.  It's a *good* comic book movie, but does that make it a "good" movie?

I guess this goes to show you, what is a "good film?"  What is "good" to one may be absurd to another.

I just thought TDK was poorly written, but in a pretensiously serious way that makes everyone think it's the Godfather. I mean, Superman I and II were almost literally the Godfather, but they're also stupid. Brando was the Godfather, and he was a huge disgusting freak. Being the Godfather isn't always a good thing.

I think even those of us who like the Nolan movies have serious issues with Christian Bale's Batman voice.  Which I'm sure we comment on numerous times in the Dark Knight thread.

I think the question shouldn't be "Why do you pick on good films" (which, as has been mentioned, is largely subjective), but rather, "Has Mike riffed any movies that he actually, genuinely likes? And not in that ironic so-bad-it's-good sense, of course". That I am actually quite curious about.

As for me, well, yes, if I look hard enough, I'm sure I could find plenty of "silly" elements in many of my favorite movies, or hell, favorite anything for that matter. But I could never bring myself down to a level required for me to really rip apart something that I feel a genuine appreciation and affection for, no matter the flaws. I'm just not someone capable of that kind of detachment. A movie like Blade Runner, for instance, I'm sure there's plenty to pick apart at that movie, but I'm in such awe for a movie like that as a whole that it'd feel cheap of me to give it a full-blown hazing. Similarly, I'd have a difficult time bringing myself to laugh or enjoy very much a rifftrax of a movie I hold dear to me no matter how well-done, clever, humorous, or pointed the observations of that rifftrax might be. It really would sour things for me knowing that after indulging in too much of such things that I could never watch a great movie again without looking out for some easily exploited flaws or idiosyncrasies to pick apart rather than, you know, actually taking in the whole experience of watching and appreciating a great film. Sure, perhaps our sacred cows need some roasting from time to time, but sometimes it reaches a point where all the jokey, jaded cynicism gets to me and I just have to walk away from it for a while. Call me thin-skinned, weak-willed, what have you if you wish, but that's just how I am, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I'm betting that Heath Ledger's death makes a riffing of The Dark Knight unlikely, not the quality of the film itself.
