...

I just finished this up the other day. Originally i had been really excited for this game, but after playing up to about Chapter Eight that faded quickly. It's a completely solid game... maybe a little above the rest when you factor in the sound design and atmosphere. But otherwise it left me feeling like i was just supposed to get from Point A to Point B over and over again.

The mythology had a lot of potential, and the logs that you find throughout the game really fill in the details. But i had almost no interest in my character, his backstory, his love interest or his motivation. I mean, he never spoke or really even interacted with any of the other characters. They flickered onto the screen, barked my next orders at me and off i went. Even if i was in the same room as them, they would just talk at me for awhile before completely ignoring me.

I love when horror manages to mix so well with science fiction. "Strategic dismemberment" is a great concept that worked pretty well. And like i said, the sound, visuals, mythology and spooky atmosphere are all top notch. So Dead Space had a lot of positives to work with, the promise of a great game was there... but i just found it lacking.

I agree with a lot of what you had to say, Rude. I beat it yesterday and I really enjoyed playing through it. Horror games aren't really my game of choice (though Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube is one of my favorite games ever). I can see it becoming a good franchise, especially seeing how the game ended. Also gives a lot of room to expand the weapons and their development.

So Dead Space is on XBL games on demand now and Ive been pondering getting it.  How is the game length?  Im getting a little tired of these really short x box games Ive played recently.

I think my run through was like 12 hours or so. But it's such a fantastic survival horror game. Rarely does a game like Dead Space come along. And for what, $20 now? It's totally worth that. According to the Gamespot  forums some people say 12 or 15-20

I would even say it's worth it just to go out and buy the official copy.  It's probably just as cheap as the Live edition (I'm guessing here, I don't have Live), it's still pretty easy to find in stories, and then you don't have to clog up your hard drive.  Even though I've beaten it a couple of times, I think it has potential to be a 'dust-off,' where you just feel like playing it again a couple of months down the road.

The only thing I do agree on with some critics is that, except for the beginning segment's creeping horror, there's no real pacing to it.  Most scares have no build-up and pay-off, it's just monsters leaping out at you.  Granted, that can still scare the piss out of you, especially at night with a good sound system, but it doesn't have that lingering feeling of dread after you turn it off the way some other games do (like Condemned 1 or Silent Hill 2).  This doesn't make the limb blasting any less awesome by any means, so I do recommend it.
